Trading Up: BGC Snags Troy Kane for Algos; TMX Lands Shaun Mclver

Interdealer broker BGC Partners has hired Troy Kane, the former chief operating officer of proprietary trading firm Eagle Seven. Kane is charged with growing the firm’s algorithmic trading business. While at Eagle Seven, Kane led that firm’s business development strategy and managed its relationships with many of the world’s global exchanges and swap execution facilities. Before that, he was responsible for proprietary trading client relationships at CME Group.

Also at BGC, the firm hired Steve McMurray as its new chief financial officer, replacing Graham Sadler, who announced his retirement back in February. McMurray, a professional with over 20-years of experience, will be responsible for BGC’s global accounting, controlling and treasury functions, including all financial reporting and budgeting. He was most recently director of finance at an independent insurance provider Amlin plc., which he joined in 2007.  Prior to that, he was chief financial accountant at the Bank of England.

TMX Group, operator of several Canadian equity trading exchanges, named Shaun McIver as its new Chief Client Officer, Equity Capital Markets. He is set to join the operator on April 18. In this new position, the 20 year professional will focus on the design and execution of enhanced sales, relationship management and distribution strategies for TMX’s capital formation and equities trading business. Most recently, he was global head of the Digital Media Solutions business at Nasdaq Inc. He has also done stints at Thomson Reuters and Teleglobe. He will report to Nicholas Thadaney, CEO of Global Equity Capital Markets at TMX.

Former Direct Edge CEO William O’Brien has surfaced as the executive chairman of Direct Match, a startup electronic treasury-trading platform operator. In his new position, O’Brien will contribute to the Direct Match’s overall strategy, development, and operations, according to a corporate announcement. (see related story here ) Prior at Direct Edge, O’Brien grew the alternative trading system’s dual matching engine operations model to one of the top four stock exchanges until he negotiated the Direct Edge’s acquisition by competing exchange operator Bats Global Markets at the start of 2014. After the transaction, O’Brien remained at Bats for six months before departing in July 2014.

Citigroup head of equity trading, Derek Bandeen, will be leaving the bulge bracket broker, according to a memo seen by staffers and Markets Media. Bandeen has been with the firm for the last eight years. No replaced has been named just yet. Earlier this year, Citi hired Armando Diaz to run its cash equities trading business. Also earlier this year, the bank brought on two senior equity derivatives sales veterans – Dirk Keijer and Quentin Andre.

The Options Clearing Corporation has appointed two new members to its Board of Directors and re-elected an additional three. Susan Lester, a long-time banking executive, and William Yates of TD Ameritrade, are the new directors. Lester replaces Matthew Gelber of Bitterroot Asset Management and Yates succeeds Wolverine Execution Services’ Judith Kula. Each will serve a three year term. Raymond Di Sanza of Charles Schwab and Co., Jonathan Werts of Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Robert Litterman of Kepos Capital were the trio that remained on the Board.

Lester, with nearly 30 years of banking and mortgage banking experience in the financial services sector, currently advises Pac West Bancorp and Arctic Cat as a member of their respective boards of directors and chair of their audit committees.

Yates, with four decades of financial market experience, currently is managing director of finance for TD Ameritrade, where he is responsible for providing regulatory financial support for the firm’s back office securities clearance and settlement functions, and providing broker/dealer balance sheet management and oversight, including operational liquidity considerations. He also oversees the institution’s work and relationships with various securities and futures regulators. , and he has been an active participant in TD Ameritrade’s online brokerage industry consolidation activities. Prior to joining TD Ameritrade in 1996, Yates spent nine years with the public accounting firm Arthur Andersen. He has served in various capacities in the securities industry, including roles with the FINRA Financial Responsibility Committee, and more recently, FINRA’s Midwest District Committee.
