Julie Abbett was recognized for Excellence in ETFs at the 2015 Women in Finance Markets Choice Awards.
The following Q&A was conducted via e-mail.
Markets Media: Describe your role at Deutsche Bank.
Julie Abbett: My role on the ETF sales and trading desk is broad, which allows me to be an ETF product specialist. I provide customized solutions for clients, producing the best possible outcomes and experiences for our clients. I lean heavily on my past experience as a portfolio manager to help me understand the types of things we can do to help our clients not only with best execution but also with growing their business.
MM: What do you (and by extension, your team and your organization) do to achieve excellence in ETFs?
JA: The ETF sales and trading desk, led by Matt Courter, focuses on forming partnerships with our clients and offering services that they would expect from their own employees which allow us to work with them as an extension of their team. We really try to understand their business, their strategies and what they are trying to specifically achieve. We try and help anyway we can to help clients achieve not only the best trading outcome but also the best outcome for their own clients.
MM: What is your perspective on being a successful woman on Wall Street, i.e. what has been your experience as a woman in a field that at least historically has been dominated by men? What is your advice for young women who aspire to a career similar to yours?
JA: Early on in my career I was very focused on what people thought and looking the part everyone expected for the job. What I learned is that if you really focus on what you are passionate about, become an expert through the love of what you do people will respect that more and want to work with you. People are drawn to positivity, energy and the desire to make a difference.
